India's capital Rises to Hazardous Smog Post Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" level.

Alarming Air Quality Levels

Various sections of the city registered an pollution measurement over 500, which represents 10x the recommended level recommended by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than healthy levels.

Firecracker Restrictions and Current Developments

Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of fireworks during celebrations due to their major role to the dangerous pollution that covers the city as colder weather approaches.

However recently, the newly elected local leadership appealed to the judicial authority to request a easing of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Court Ruling and Implementation

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the request, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during specific hours throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Several monitoring devices throughout the city showed contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to extremely hazardous readings seen during Diwali in at least the past three years.

International Implications

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also initiated a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Near celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous particles in the air has been found to spike to seventy percent above the worst records ever recorded in Beijing, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

This crisis in the capital is caused by a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, construction activities, rubbish burning and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing toxic haze that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air descends.

Health and Economic Toll

Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million people living in the capital region is substantial, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air causes elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can result in cancer.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be causing approximately 10k untimely deaths each year in Delhi.
