Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
